In addition to existing repair set ups , inclusion of start ups, local manufacturers like those in Rajkot and elsewhere can be dovetailed for this national resurgence. Not only we can take care of our defence forces but dual use capacity can be leveraged for civil side including vice versa. We can be a world hub in this field this heralding a new era of employment as well as capacity creation.

More than the production or purchase of the equipment, their maintenance assumes most important role to deliver it’s outcome in the battlefield. Since bulk of our equipment is of Russian origin , it becomes all the more important to develop indigenous repair and maintenance capability. Time criticality in the battlefield necessitates urgent repair capability in the immediate vicinity. This subject is more important than purchasing equipment with exorbitant costs.

  • We have to look at capability build up in reverse engineering as well to hone our skill sets in certain aspects of repair . Earlier we do it better. There are large No of local capacities which need to be leveraged.

Dear Ashok, thanks for your excellent insights. Warm regards. Jastej

  • While the Government remains busy in handling the routine, some one has to do thinking, planning and operationalisation. Leading countries depend on accredited forums like this or think tanks to prepare the roadmap. Hope Government seizes this opportunity and empowers it’s local enterprenures.

  • For the Make in India initiative to be successful on a sustainable basis, MRO has to be an integral part of the initiative.
No indigenisation initiative can survive without the life cycle support for the indigenous equipment, for which MRO is a critical component.
This forum will help to ensure that the equipment and MRO infrastructure are developed concurrently. This will facilitate successful induction and exploitation of the indigenously developed equipment.
We also need to focus on indigenisation of the MRO support eco-system for the imported equipment in service. Over dependence on another country for MRO support of imported equipment can prove to be disastrous during operations, in today’s world of fast changing international equations, as seen during the on going Ukrainian Crisis.
